Categories Products

The two-level category/sub-category tree used to organize and filter the product catalog.

This is the shared taxonomy screen (also used elsewhere in the app for HR departments, CRM sources, and similar lookup lists) filtered to type=product; on this type, viewing requires category.view or category.create. The table shows Category (a sub-category's name is indented with a -- prefix under its parent), Code (short code), a Color Code swatch, and an Action column with Edit (category.update) and Delete (category.delete).

A Filter by Category dropdown narrows the table to the sub-categories of a chosen parent. The create/edit form takes a Name, optional Short Code, description and color tag, plus an Add as Sub Category checkbox with a parent dropdown to nest a category one level under an existing one — the hierarchy only goes two levels deep.

This screen's multi-select "bulk delete" toolbar is enabled only for a couple of unrelated HR taxonomy types elsewhere in the app, not for product categories, so categories here are removed one row at a time via each row's Delete button.

Step-by-step Workflow

1. Browse or filter the treeUse Filter by Category to drill into a parent category's sub-categories.
2. Add a top-level categoryClick Add, name it, and optionally set a short code and color tag.
3. Add a sub-categoryCreate another category, tick Add as Sub Category, and choose the parent it nests under.
4. Use categories on productsSelect Category and Sub Category on a product's create/edit form so it can be filtered and reported on.
5. Maintain the treeEdit a category's name, code or color, or Delete one that's no longer needed.
